After a earning a university degree in economics, Richard joined the U.S. Air Force and became a pilot. He served in Vietnam in 1968, and was honorably discharged as a captain in 1972. He then joined the FBI and was a Special Agent for 25 years. His cases included bank robberies, kidnappings, foreign counterintelligence, bombings, and terrorism. He also served as a longtime firearms instructor, retiring from the FBI after serving his last 16 years in the Las Vegas FBI office.
Richard has been married to his wife, Trish, for 41 years. They have two daughters, Kimberly and Michele. Kimberly graduated from UNLV and Michele graduated from UNR. Both daughters are married. Richard and his wife have four grandchildren. Both daughters and their husbands live in Las Vegas.
